Text:  John 15:12-15  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.  13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.  14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.  15  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

FINISH THE FATHER’S WORK

John 4:34  Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish [aorist active] his work.

JESUS MUST BE KILLED

Matthew 16:21  From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer [experience] many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed [aorist passive], and be raised again [aorist passive] the third day.

HE GAVE UP HIS SPIRIT

John 19:30  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished [perfect, finished once and for all]: and he bowed his head, and gave up [aorist active, event] the ghost [pneuma, spirit]. (not soul)

OFFERED HIMSELF ONCE

Hebrews 7:27  Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did [aorist active indicative] once, when he offered up [aorist active indicative] himself.

CHRIST DIED, AORIST

1 Corinthians 15:3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died [aorist active indicative] for our sins according to the scriptures;

COMMANDMENT TO LITTLE CHILDREN

John 15:12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

NEW COMMANDMENT

John 13:33-35  Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.  34  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love [present active] one another; as I have loved [aorist active] you, that ye also love [present active] one another.  35  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have [ecw, esteemeth] love one to another.

LOVE FOR HIS FRIENDS

John 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down [aorist active subjunctive] his life [soul, will] for his friends.

FOR HIS FRIENDS, THE SHEEP

John 10:11  I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth [lay down, present active indicative] his life [soul] for the sheep. (not every man)

REPEATED THE SECOND TIME

John 10:15  … I lay down [giveth, present active indicative] my life [soul] for the sheep. (not all)

LAYING DOWN HIS SOUL

John 10:17  Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down [giveth, present active indicative] my life [soul], that [so that, in order that] I might take [aorist active, not passive] it again.

VOLUNTARILY LAYING IT DOWN

John 10:18  No man [better, not even one] taketh [present active indicative] it (soul) from me, but I lay it (soul) down [present active indicative] of myself. I have power to lay it (soul) down [present active indicative], and I have power to take it (soul) again [aorist active subjunctive]. This commandment have I received of my Father.

IT BEGAN IN GETHSEMANE

Mark 14:32-34  And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.  33  And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;  34  And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death [qantov, soul death, James 5:20]: tarry ye here, and watch.

BEING IN AN AGONY

Luke 22:44  And being [imperfect middle, continuous action in the past] in an agony [anguish, struggle] he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

TAKE AWAY THIS CUP

Mark 14:35-36  And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.  36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

THE LORD BRUISED HIM

Isaiah 53:10  Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise (not the elders) him; he (not the chief priests) hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin (for the sheep), he (the lamb of God) shall see his seed (sheep who believe, present active), he shall prolong his days (as high priest), and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

THE TRAVAIL OF HIS SOUL

Isaiah 53:11  He shall see of the travail of his soul, (Gethsemane) and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge (I know my sheep) shall my righteous servant justify many (that are called); for he shall bear (the consequences of) their (his seed) iniquities.

TRAVAIL OF HIS SOUL

Hebrews 5:7  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save [present active, deliver] him from [ek, out from] death [qanatov, (soul death)], and was heard [better, was obedient] in that he feared;

HE LEARNED OBEDIENCE

Hebrews 5:8  Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

HIS FRIENDS OBEY HIM

John 15:14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

OUR FRIENDS OBEY HIM

1 John 3:16  Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down [aorist active indicative] his life for us: and we ought [present active, owe, obligated] (not commanded) to lay down [present active infinitive] our lives [yuch, souls] for the brethren.

BRETHREN DO HIS WILL

Matthew 12:50  For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

WE MINISTER TO OUR LORD

Matthew 25:40  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it (minister) unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it (minister) unto me.

HE IS STILL SERVING THE SHEEP

Philippians 2:5-7  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  6  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant,
