Text:  Romans 9:30-33  What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.  31  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.  32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone;  33  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

TWO RIGHTEOUSNESS’S

Philippians 3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

BOTH REQUIRED TO ENTER THE KINGDOM

Matthew 5:20  For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

PAUL IN THE LAW, A PHARISEE

Philippians 3:5-6  Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;  6  Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD BY FAITH

Romans 3:21-22  But now the righteousness of God without [in addition to] the (moral, being just) law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;  22  Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe [present active, (not an event)]: . . .

THE JUST LIVE BY FAITH

Romans 1:17  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

GENTILES ATTAINED RIGHTEOUSNESS

Romans 9:30  What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed [present active participle, to pursue vigorously ] not [mh] after righteousness, have attained [active voice, they obtained, not reckoned] to righteousness [accusative case, no preposition], even (continuing definition) the righteousness which is of [ek, by means of] [the] faith. (by means of continuing to please God bu faith) (faith is not a verb therefore not an event)

FAITH RECKONED

Romans 4:5  But to him that worketh [present middle, for himself, (for God)] not, but believeth [present active] on him that justifieth [present active] the ungodly, his faith is counted [present passive, reckoneth] for [eiv, leading to] righteousness. (faith is a noun not a verb nor an event)

LAW BEFORE FAITH

Galatians 3:23  But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

CHRIST IS RISEN, FAITH WORKS

1 Corinthians 15:14  And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

RECKONED RIGHTEOUSNESS

Romans 4:6  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, (faith not in this verse)

WITHOUT LAW SIN NOT IMPUTED

Romans 5:13  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

RECKONED MORALLY JUST

Romans 4:7-8  Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.  8  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

ABRAHAM RECKONED JUST

Romans 4:9  Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for [eiv, leading to] righteousness.

RECKONED AND SUSTAINED FAITH

Romans 3:30  Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by [ek, out from] (reckoned) faith (before the law was nailed to the tree), and uncircumcision through [dia, by means of] (sustained) faith (after the resurrection of Christ).

CONTINUE IN THE FAITH

Acts 14:22  Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

SOME WILL DEPART FROM FAITH

1 Timothy 4:1  . . . in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, . . .

OBEYING

Romans 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey [present active]; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto [leading to] righteousness (of the just)?

BELIEVING AND CONFESSING

Romans 10:10  For with the heart man believeth [present active, (not an event)] unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession [present active, (not an event)] is made unto [leading to] (so great) salvation.

ISRAEL DID NOT REACH IT

Romans 9:31-32  But Israel, which followed after [present active participle] the law of righteousness, hath not attained [active not passive voice, to come to, to reach, to arrive ] to the law of righteousness.  32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone;

ISRAEL WAS APPOINTED

1 Peter 2:7-8  Unto you therefore which believe [present active participle] he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient [present active participle, continually faithless], the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,  8  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient [present active participle, continually disobedient]: whereunto also they were appointed.

GENTILES ALSO CHOSEN

1 Peter 2:9-10  But ye (strangers, 1:1) are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:  10  Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

THE BELIEVING WILL NOT BE ASHAMED

Romans 9:33  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth [present active participle] on him shall not be ashamed [disgraced, humiliated]. (being offended)

CONTINUE LIVING BY FAITH

Romans 10:10-11  For with the heart man believeth [present active, (not an event)] unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made [present active, (not an event)] unto [leading to] (so great) salvation.  11  For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth [present active] on him shall not be ashamed [disgraced, humiliated].
