Text:  Romans 16:17-20  Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  18  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.  19  For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.  20  And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

PAUL’S EXHORTATION

Romans 16:17  Now I beseech [present active, exhort] you, brethren, mark [present active, look at by inspection] them which cause [present active participle, ones doing] [the] divisions  and [the] offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid [present active imperative, lean out from] them.

MARK THEM THAT WALK AS PAUL

Philippians 3:17  Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

PAUL’S PRACTICE

Philippians 3:8-11, 14  Yea doubtless, … that I may win Christ,  9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:  10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;  11  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection [out resurrection] of [from] the dead. 14  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

PAUL’S EXHORTATION

Philippians 3:15-17  Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.  16  Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.  17  Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

DIVISIONS CAUSE TENSION

1 Corinthians 1:10-11  Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.  11  For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, … that there are contentions among you.

OFFENCES CAUSES MANY TO QUIT

Matthew 18:7  Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

SATAN USES PERSECUTION

Matthew 13:20-21  But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;  21  Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth [present active] for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the (kingdom) word, by and by he is offended.

SATAN USES DISCIPLES

Matthew 16:22-23  Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.  23  But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

FALSE PROPHETS AND TEACHERS

2 Peter 2:1  But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privately shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

GRIEVOUS WOLVES FROM WITHIN

Acts 20:29-30  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  30  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

FALSE APOSTLES, AND DECEITFUL

2 Corinthians 11:13-15  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  14  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  15  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed [metaschmatizw outward change] as the ministers of righteousness; …

CONTINUE IN WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

Acts 17:11  These (of Berea) were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

THEY

Romans 16:18  For they (them of verse 17) that are such serve [present active] not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

THE BELLY IS THEIR GOD

Philippians 3:18-19  (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:  19  Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

GOOD WORDS, FAIR SPEECHES

2 Corinthians 11:3  But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty (change her mind and lifestyle), so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity [singleness] that is in Christ (lifestyle, not position).

AFFIRMS THEIR OBEDIENCE

Romans 16:19  For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad [present active, rejoice] therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have [present active, desire] you wise [skilled] unto that which is good, and simple [pure, innocent] concerning evil.

YE WERE ENSAMPLES

1 Thessalonians 1:7  So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

AGAIN, TO THOSE IN THESSALONICA

2 Thessalonians 1:4  So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

WALK IN WISDOM

Ephesians 5:11-15  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.  12  For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.  13  But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.  14  Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise (now) from the dead (those twice dead), and Christ shall give thee light (now).  15  See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

A BRUISE HINDERS

Romans 16:20  And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under (he is down) your feet (walk on your inheritance) shortly. The grace (the power of Christ) of our Lord Jesus Christ be with [accompany] you. Amen.

SUBDUE SATAN

Joshua 10:24  … when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said …, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings.

DAVID STRENGTHEN FOR BATTLE

2 Samuel 22:40-41  For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.  41  Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.

GRACE, THE POWER OF CHRIST

2 Corinthians 12:9  And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
