A LITTLE GRAMMAR

There are really two fundamental ways of viewing action. . . .  as a point which we may call punctiliar action; or it may be regarded as in progress, as a line, and this we may call linear action. The perfect tense is a combination of these two ideas: it looks in perspective at the action, and regards the results of the action as continuing to exist; that is, in progress at a given point. Hence the perfect tense has both elements, linear and punctiliar. The aorist may be represented by a dot (), the present by a line (─────), and the perfect by the combination of the two (●────).
