ROMANS 4:4-5

Sunday Morning: June 12, 2005

Text  Romans 4:4-8  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.  5  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.  6  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,  7  Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.  8  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

WORKS WITHOUT GRACE

Romans 4:4  Now to him that worketh [present middle, for myself] is the reward [hire, wages] not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

WORK IN HIS NAME

Colossians 3:17  And whatsoever ye do [present active] in word or deed [noun, works], do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

REWARD OF THE INHERITANCE

Colossians 3:23-24  And whatsoever ye do [present active], do [work, present imperative] it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;  24  Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward [repayment] of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

GRACE FOR ACCEPTABLE SERVICE

Hebrews 12:28  Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

GRACE FOR THE WORK

Acts 14:26  And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work [noun, deed] which they fulfilled.

GRACE, THE POWER OF CHRIST

2 Corinthians 12:9  And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

LABOR BY HIS GRACE

1 Corinthians 15:10  But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

THE WORD OF HIS GRACE

Acts 20:32  And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

GRACE TO ABOUND TO EVERY GOOD WORK

2 Corinthians 9:8  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

JUSTIFYING THE UNGODLY

Romans 4:5  But to him that worketh (present middle, (alone)] not, but believeth [present active participle (faith)] on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith (equivalent to believe, present active participle) is counted for righteousness.

WORKETH

John 6:28-29  Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?  29  Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work [noun, deed] of God, that ye believe [present active] on him whom he hath sent.

MORAL LAW FOR THE UNGODLY

1 Timothy 1:8-9  But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;  9  Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous [just] man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

DAVID WAS BLESSED

Romans 4:6-7  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,  7  Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

DAVID’S TESTIMONY

Psalms 32:1-2   Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.  2  Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

UN-CHARGEABLE

Romans 4:8  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

DAVID’S SIN

2 Samuel 11:1-5  And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.  2  And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.  3  And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?  4  And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.  5  And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

DAVID’S CONFESSION

Psalms 51:1-4  <A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.> Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.  2  Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.  3  For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.  4  Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

CONTEXT OF DAVID’S SIN

2 Samuel 12:30  And he (David) took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.

DAVID WAS JUSTIFIED

1 Chronicles 20:1-2  And it came to pass, that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out to battle, Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.

2  And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David's head: and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city.

THEN DAVID BECAME OBEDIENT

1 Kings 15:5  Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
