ROMANS 5:10

Sunday Morning: August 14,2005

Text:  Romans 5:8-10  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.  10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

CHRIST DIED

Romans 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died [aorist, event] for us.

HIS SPIRIT WENT TO THE FATHER

Luke 23:46  And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit [pneuma]: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost [ekpnew, breathed out].

WITHOUT THE SPIRIT

James 2:26  For as the body without the spirit [pneuma] is dead [nekrov, not qanatov]. . . .

HIS BODY WENT INTO THE TOMB

Matthew 27:59-60  And when Joseph had taken the body (Jesus), he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,  60  And laid it in his own new tomb. . .

HIS SOUL IN PARADISE

Luke 23:43  And Jesus said unto him, Verily [indeed, emphatic] I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

HE DIED FOR ALL

2 Corinthians 5:14-15  For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died [aorist, event] for all, then were all dead:  15  And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

MUCH MORE,
HIS BLOOD FOR JUSTIFICATION

Romans 5:9  Much more then, being now justified (not chargeable) by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

THE BLOOD CLEANSETH

1 John 1:7  But if we walk [present active] in the light, as he is in the light, we have [present active] fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth [present active] us from all sin. (justification)

CONFESSION BRINGS CLEANSING

1 John 1:9  If we confess [present active] our sins, he is [present active] faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

ENEMIES

Romans 5:10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death [qanatov, not nekrov, noun] of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

POSITION OF GOD’S ENEMY

Hebrews 1:13  But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

THE EARTH IS MY FOOTSTOOL

Isaiah 66:1  Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool:

WRITTEN IN THE EARTH

Jeremiah 17:13  O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

NAMES WRITTEN IN HEAVEN

Luke 10:20  . . . rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

SINS SEPARATE

Isaiah 59:1-2  Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:  2  But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

RECONCILIATION ILLUSTRATED

1 Corinthians 7:10-11  And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:  11  But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

RECONCILED BY THE DEATH

Romans 5:10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death [noun with the definite article, a place, a person or a thing] of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

DIED FOR OUR SALVATION

Romans 5:8  . . . while we were yet sinners, Christ died [verb, aorist] for us. (as well as for all)

THE DEATH FOR RECONCILIATION

Colossians 1:21-23  And you, that were sometime (not all the time) alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled  22  In the body of his flesh (in the garden) through [the] death [noun, a place, a person or a thing], to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:  23  If ye continue in the faith

DEATHS

Isaiah 53:9  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death [Hebrew, deaths]; …

HIS SOUL AN OFFERING FOR SIN

Isaiah 53:10  Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul (not his body) an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days (as our high priest), and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

TRAVAIL OF HIS SOUL

Mark 14:33-36  And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;  34  And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto [ewv, until] death [qanatov]: tarry ye here, and watch.  35  And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

THAT DEATH

36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

BEAR THE INIQUITY OF THE MANY

Isaiah 53:11  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear [5445] their (many) iniquities. (be reduced to a footstool, written in the earth)

BEAR THE CONSEQUENCES

Lamentations 5:7  Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne [5445] their iniquities.

HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR THE SHEEP

John 10:14-15  I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  15  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life [yuch, soul] for the sheep.

HE DID NOT TAKE HIS SOUL AGAIN

John 10:17-18  Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life [yucn, soul], that I might take it again.  18  No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

LAYING DOWN MY LIFE

Matthew 16:24-26  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  25  For whosoever will save his life [yuch, soul] shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life [yuch, soul] for my sake shall find it.  26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul [yuch]? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul [yuch]?

HATE YOUR SOUL

John 12:24-25  Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die [be dead], it abideth alone: but if it die [be dead], it bringeth forth much fruit.  25  He that loveth his life [yuch, soul] shall lose [perish] it; and he that hateth his life [yuch, soul] in this world shall keep [guard] it (soul) unto [eiv, leading to] life eternal [agelasting]. (Kingdom life)

WE SHOULD LAY DOWN OUR LIVES

1 John 3:16  Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life [yuch, soul] for us: and we (brethren) ought to lay down our lives [yuch, soul] (not physical death) for the brethren.

SAVING A SOUL FROM DEATH

James 5:19-20  Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him (reconciliation);  20  Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death [qanatov, a place], and shall hide a multitude of sins. (justification)

PASSED FROM THE DEATH

John 5:24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth [present active] my word, and believeth [present active] on him [the Father] that sent me, hath [present active, regards, esteems] everlasting [agelasting kingdom] life, and shall not come into condemnation [judgment]; but is passed from [the] death [qanatov] unto [the] life.
