ROMANS 8:4-9

Sunday Morning:  March 5, 2006

Text:  Romans 8:4-9  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.  6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.  9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

MORE THAN DUTY

Romans 8:4  That [in order that] the righteousness [an equitable deed] of the law might be fulfilled [aorist passive subjunctive] in us, who walk [present active participle] not after [according to] the flesh, but after [according to] the Spirit (Abba spirit of submission, Mark 14:36).

THEY WERE BOTH JUST

Luke 1:6  And they were both (Zacharias, Elizabeth) righteous [just] before God, walking [present middle] in all the commandments and ordinances [righteousness, Rom. 8:4] of the Lord blameless.

OUR DUTY TO DO

Luke 17:10  So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

BEYOND DUTY

Romans 12:11  Not slothful in business [diligence]; fervent [present active] in spirit; serving [present active] the Lord;

WALKING ACCORDING TO SPIRIT

Romans 8:15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption [being placed as a son], whereby we cry [present active], Abba, Father.

TWO FOLD CRY

Mark 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

WHERE ARE YOUR THOUGHTS

Romans 8:5  For they that are after [according to] the flesh do mind [present active] the things of the flesh; but they that are after [according to] the Spirit (do mind) the things of the Spirit.

PAUL’S PASSION

Philippians 3:10-11  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;  11  If by any means I might attain [subjunctive, might not] unto the [out] resurrection of [out from] the dead.

PAUL’S PRESS

Philippians 3:13-14  Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,  14  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

SUBMISSION TO HIS WILL

Galatians 5:16  This I say then, Walk in the (Abba) Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

EVIDENCE OF THAT WALK

Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the (Abba) Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith(fullness),  23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

THE CARNAL PERISH

Romans 8:6  For to be [the] carnally [flesh]  [the] minded [mind set] is death [qanatov, (loss of a life of glory in the millennial kingdom)]; but to be spiritually minded [the mind of the spirit] is life and peace.

SOW THE DESIRED CROP

Galatians 6:7-9  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth [present active], (sow wheat) that shall he also reap. (to reap wheat)  8  For he that soweth [present active] (carnal mind) to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption [perish, ruin]; but he that soweth to the (Abba) Spirit shall of the [that] Spirit reap (harvest) life everlasting [agelasting].  9  And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

A CARNAL MIND IS LAWLESS

Romans 8:7  Because the carnal mind [mind of the flesh] is enmity against God: for it is not [ou, emphatic not] subject [present passive indicative] to the law of God, neither indeed can be [present passive indicative].

DESPISE THE WORD?

Proverbs 13:13  Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

SINNING WITH PRIDE

Numbers 15:30-31  But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.  31  Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.

THOSE IN THE FLESH

Romans 8:8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot [ou, emphatic no] please God.

ARE WITHOUT FAITH

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh [present active] to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently [present middle] seek [present active, the ones seeking] him.

TANGLED IN THE FLESH

2 Timothy 2:4  No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

SPIRIT OF GOD

Romans 8:9  But ye are [endureth] not [ou, emphatic] in [en, by means of] the flesh, but in [en, by means of] the (Abba) Spirit, if so be that [eiper, if perhaps, conditional] the Spirit of God dwell [present active indicative] in you. . . .

THE MIND OF GOD

1 Corinthians 7:40  But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.

LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Romans 8:14  For as many as are led [present active] by the Spirit of God, they are [present active, being] the sons of God.

SPIRIT OF GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT

Matthew 12:28  But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

SPIRIT OF CHRIST

Romans 8:9  . . . Now if any man have [ecw, present active, esteem, regard] not [ou, emphatic] the Spirit of Christ, he is none [ou, emphatic] of his [genitive, of him].

GOD GAVE US THAT SPIRIT

Romans 8:15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption [son-ship], whereby [en ov, in which] we cry [present active], Abba, Father.

SINCE WE ENDURE

Galatians 4:6  And because ye are sons [and since sons endure], God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying [present active], Abba, Father.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST

John 4:34  Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

MIND OF CHRIST

Philippians 2:5, 7-8  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: . . 7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

RENEW YOUR MIND

Romans 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
