ROMANS 9:7-13

Sunday Morning:  August 6, 2006

Text:  Romans 9:6-13  Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:  7  Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.  8  That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.  9  For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.  10  And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;  11  (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)  12  It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.  13  As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

NOT ALL OUT OF ISRAEL

Romans 9:6  Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all [those out of] Israel, which are of [these] Israel [Israelites}:

MY TRANSLATION OF 6b

Romans 9:6  . . . For not all those out of Israel (12 tribes) are these Israelites. (selected tribes)

ISRAELITES, SELECT TRIBES

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption (birthright, Joseph), and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service (Levi) of God, and the promises;

JUDAH AND JOSEPH

1 Chronicles 5:2  For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph's:)

YES, THEY ARE OF ABRAHAM, BUT

Romans 9:7  Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children (not all chosen children of the promise, v.8): but, In Isaac (type of Christ) shall thy seed (select children of the promise) be called.

AS MANY AS GOD SHALL CALL

Acts 2:39  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off (Gentiles), even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (not all children are called)

ONLY A FEW ARE ELECT

Matthew 22:14  For many are called, but few are chosen [called out, elect].

ONLY ONE CHILD OF PROMISE, ISAAC

Romans 9:8  That is, They which are the children [teknon] of the flesh (Keturah, and Abraham’s concubines Gen 25:6; Esau), these are not the children [teknon] (of the promise) of God: but the children [teknon] of the promise are counted for the seed.

CHILDREN OF THE FLESH

Genesis 25:6  But unto the sons of the concubines (Keturah, Agar), which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them (the seed not chosen of Abraham) away from Isaac his son (the chosen seed of promise), while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

ONE ANOINTED SEED

Galatians 3:16  Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ [anointed].

BRETHREN ARE CHILDREN OF PROMISE

Galatians 4:28  Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

 SEPARATE INHERITANCES

Galatians 4:30-31  Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.  31  So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

ONE SON SELECTED BY GOD

Romans 9:9  For this is the word of promise (the promise v. 8), At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. (Isaac)

THE PROMISE TO ABRAHAM

Romans 4:13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed (Isaac), through the law, but through the (v.11 imputed) righteousness of faith.

PERSUADED SARAH WOULD CONCEIVE

Romans 4:21-22  And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.  22  And therefore it (faith v.20) was imputed to him for righteousness.

REBECCA ALSO BY ISAAC

Romans 9:10  And not only this; but when Rebecca also (as Sara, special birth) had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;

ISAAC BLESSED JACOB FIRST

Hebrews 11:20  By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

HIGH PRIEST OF THINGS TO COME

Hebrews 9:11  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, . . .

GOOD THINGS TO COME

Hebrews 9:15  And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament [covenant], that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament [covenant], they which are called might receive the promise of eternal [age, kingdom age] inheritance.

CHILDREN OF PROMISE CHOSEN

Romans 9:11  (For the children (Esau and Jacob) being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God (only here) according to election (not before conception) might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) (foreknowledge of who would be in the family before any one is chosen)

CHOSEN IN CHRIST

Ephesians 1:4-5  According as he hath chosen us in (part of the family) him (Christ) before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children [uioqesia, to place as a son] by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

WHOM HE FOREKNEW HE CALLED

Romans 8:29-30  For whom he did foreknow (of those in the family), he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn (birthright) among many brethren.  30  Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: . . .

PURPOSE OF ELECTION

Romans 9:12  It was said unto her, The elder (Esau) shall serve [future active indicative, in bondage] the younger (Jacob, Israel).

THE BIRTHRIGHT

Deuteronomy 21:17  But he shall acknowledge the . . . firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

THE BLESSING

Genesis 27:29  Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM

Genesis 28:4  And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

JACOB LORD OVER ESAU

Genesis 27:37  And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?

LOVE/HATE ARE RELATIVE

Romans 9:13  As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

HATE YOUR WIFE

Luke 14:26  If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

LOVE YOUR WIFE

Ephesians 5:28  So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

BELOVED OF GOD

1 Thessalonians 1:4-5  Knowing, brethren [case of address] beloved [case of address] [beloved of God], your election of God.  5  For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, . . .

BY OUR GOSPEL

2 Thessalonians 2:14  Whereunto he called you [brethren, beloved] by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (As kings and lords in his kingdom)

TO BE KINGS AND LORDS

Revelation 17:14  These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
