ROMANS 10:1-4

Sunday Morning:  September 24, 2006

Text:  Romans 10:1-3  Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.  2  For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.  3  For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

PAUL’S PRAYER

Romans 10:1  Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is [NT omits], that they might be saved.

TO THE JEW FIRST

Acts 17:1-2  Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:  2  And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

THEY

Romans 9:27  Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a (saved) remnant shall be saved:

THE CALLED REMNANT

Romans 9:15  For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

PRAYING FOR THE REMNANT

Romans 9:16  So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

PRAY FOR WILL OF GOD

John 1:12-13  . . . to them that believe [present active participle] on his name:  13  Which were born [comes at the end of the verse], not of [ek, out from] blood, nor of [ek, out from] the will of the flesh, nor of [ek, out from] the will of man, but of [ek, out from] God [were born (not from above) (the ones believing)].

CORNELIUS WAS ALREADY SAVED

Acts 11:14  Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

CORNELIUS GIVEN LIKE GIFT

Acts 11:16-17  Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.  17  Forasmuch then as God gave them (Cornelius and his house) the like gift (the promise, after they were saved) as he did unto us, who believed [aorist active participle] on the Lord Jesus Christ (as the Philippian Jailor did); what was I, that I could withstand God?

THEY TAUGHT THE CEREMONIAL LAW

Acts 15:1  And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses (ceremonial law), ye cannot be saved.

SALVATION  BEYOND SALVATION

Acts 15:11  But we believe (goes before “be saved”) [present active indicative] that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall [we believe, present active] [to] be saved [aorist passive infinitive], even [manner] as they. (believe, present tense to be saved)

FOR THOSE IN CHRIST

2 Timothy 2:10  Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain (Strong’s: a mark to be reached) the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal [age lasting] glory.

SO GREAT SALVATION

Hebrews 2:3  How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord (the kingdom of heaven message to saved Jews), and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

 SAVED ARE WON

1 Corinthians 9:19-22  For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain [win] the more.  20  And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain [win] the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain [win] them that are under the law;  21  To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain [win] them that are without law.  22  To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain [win] the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some (not all because only many are called and few called out).

YOU WIN BY EXAMPLE AND TEACHING

2 Timothy 2:24-26  And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,  25  In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging [epignwsiv, distinct knowledge] of the truth;  26  And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

WIN THEM BY YOUR HOPE OF GLORY

1 Peter 3:1  Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own (saved but disobedient) husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

READY TO SHARE ANSWERS

1 Peter 3:15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

THE REMNANT LACK KNOWLEDGE

Romans 10:2  For I bear them record that they have [present active] a zeal [jealousy] of God, but not according to knowledge [epignwsiv, exact knowledge].

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIRES ZEAL

Acts 13:43-46  Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.  44  And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.  45  But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy [zeal], and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.  46  Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God (mysteries of the kingdom) should first have been spoken to you (Jews): but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

UNGODLY ZEAL

James 3:13-17  Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.  14  But if ye have bitter envying [zeal] and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.  15  This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.  16  For where envying [zeal] and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.  17  But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

THEY BEING IGNORANT

Romans 10:3  For they being ignorant [present active] of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

PAUL WAS IGNORANT OF THE TRUTH

1 Timothy 1:13  Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD BY FAITH

Philippians 3:6, 8c-9  Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law (ceremonial law), blameless.  8 . . . for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: . . . that I may win Christ,  9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law (ceremonial law), but that which is through [dia, (continues through)] the faith of [from] Christ (our high priest), the righteousness which is of God by faith:
