TWO DAYS IN SAMARIA

Sunday Morning - March 17, 1996

Text: John 4:3-4 "He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. 4. And he must needs go through Samaria."

John 4:43 "Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee."

John 3:27 "John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven."

GENTILES AND SAMARITANS EXCLUDED

Matthew 10:5 "These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:"

ONLY TO ISRAEL

Matthew 10:6-7 "But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand." A MYSTERY

JUDEA, SAMARIA, AND GALILEE

... were generally considered, in Roman times, to be the three main geographical divisions of Palestine.

JUDEA

FROM: THE POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS CENTER OF ISRAEL. In Ezra 5:8, "...we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God," the city of Jerusalem and the territory immediately surrounding it.

GALILEE

TO: LOW LIFE OF ISRAEL... Solomon paid Hiram of Tyre twenty cities of Galilee for the building materials Hiram supplied for the Temple and royal palace (1 Kings 9:11), but the cities did not please Hiram, who called them Cabul, meaning, "like nothing" (1 Kings 9:12-13). Jesus devoted most of His earthly ministry to Galilee, being known as the Galilean (Matt. 26:69).

SAMARIA

TWO DAY DELAY: NO LIFE OF ISRAEL... Area given to the sons of Joseph who had these two sons by an gentile. Genesis 46:20 "And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On (Nahn) bare unto him." It was the cult center for the worship of the sun-god, Ra (Atum).

On the same level as Gentiles. When the Assyrians conquered Israel and exiled 27,290 Israelites, a "remnant of Israel" remained in the land. Assyrian captives from distant places also settled there (2 Kings 17:24). This led to the intermarriage of some, though not all, Jews with Gentiles and to widespread worship of foreign gods. By the time the Jews returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple and the walls of Jerusalem, Ezra and Nehemiah refused to let the Samaritans share in the experience (Ezra 4:1-3; Neh. 4:7).

John 4:4 "And he must needs go through Samaria."

HIS DISCIPLES WERE GONE

John 4:6-8 "Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)"

THE GIFT OF GOD

John 4:10 "Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water."

John 4:14 "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never [no not unto the age] thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing [PMP] up into everlasting life."

Romans 6:22-23 "But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have [PAI] your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift [GRACE GIFT] of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

GIFT BY GRACE

Romans 5:15 "But not as the offence, so also is the free [GRACE] gift. For if through the offence of one [THE] many be dead [apoqnhskw, PAI], much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto [THE] many."

INHERIT THE GIFT IN THE COMING AGE

Matthew 19:28-29 "And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life."

Mark 10:30 "But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world [AGE] to come eternal life."

HE REVEALED HIMSELF TO HER

John 4:25-26 "The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he."

THE LORD KNEW THE PLAN

Acts 15:18 "Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world."

Acts 15:14 "Simeon [PETER] hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name." AT THE HOUSE OF CORNELIUS

John 4:27 "And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman"

PROPHETIC

John 4:35 "Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest."

THESE CITIES

Joshua 21:9 "And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name,"

THE FIELDS OF THE CITY

Joshua 21:12 "But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb [GENTILE] the son of Jephunneh for his possession."

Acts 1:8 "...ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Galilee is not mentioned.

TWO DAYS (2,000 years)

John 4:40 "So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days."

2 Peter 3:8 "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

GENTILES SEE
THE MYSTERY OF THE KINGDOM

John 9:39 "And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind."

NOW THE PEOPLE OF GOD

1 Peter 2:9-10 "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."
