FAITHFUL SERVANT

Sunday Morning - July 14, 1996

Text: Matthew 25:23 "His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

The faithful servant is the servant who is believing in the present tense.

FOR - Conjunction referring to the virgins

FOR

Matthew 25:14 "For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods."

THE TEN VIRGINS

Matthew 25:1 "Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom."

Matthew 25:7-8 "Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 8. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone[ING] out"

Matthew 25:10-12 "And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. YOU WERE NOT READY

13. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."

INTO A FAR COUNTRY

Matthew 25:14 "For [the kingdom of heaven is] as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods."

Luke 19:12-13 "He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come."

HIS OWN

Matthew 25:14 "For [the kingdom of heaven is] as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods."

Matthew 25:15 "And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey."

FIVE, TWO, ONE TALENTS

Matthew 25:15 "And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several [OWN] ability; and straightway took his journey."

GAINED - PROFITABLE

Matthew 25:16-17 "Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made [GAINED] them other five talents. 17. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two."

James 4:13 "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:"

I WAS AFRAID

Matthew 25:25 "And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine."

Luke 19:20 "And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:"

John 11:44 "And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go."

WICKED AND SLOTHFUL SERVANT

Matthew 25:26 "His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strowed:"

GET SOME HELP

Matthew 25:27 "Thou oughtest [AFRAID] therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury."

UNPROFITABLE

Matthew 25:30 "And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH

Matthew 24:51 "And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Matthew 22:13 "Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Luke 13:28 "There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out."

OUR DUTY TO DO

Luke 17:7-10 "But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? 8. And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? 9. Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. 10. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do."

HE SHALL HAVE ABUNDANCE

Matthew 25:28-29 "Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. 29. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath."
