BURYING THE DEAD

Sunday Morning - January 12, 1997

Read Romans 6:1-11

Text: John 12:24-26 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour."

LAZARUS DIED

John 11:14 "Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead."

LAZARUS WAS BURIED

John 11:34 "And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see."

TURN HIM LOOSE

John 11:44 "And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: ... Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go."

 BURIED BY BAPTISM

Romans 6:4 "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: ..."

RECKON DEATH AND LIFE

Romans 6:11 "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord."

THE MULTITUDES CAME

Luke 3:7 "Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, ...."

BRING FORTH FRUIT

Luke 3:8 "Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance"

WHAT SHALL WE DO

Luke 3:10-14 "And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11. He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. 12. Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? 13. And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. 14. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages."

JESUS CAME

Matthew 3:13-17 "Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15. And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

SUFFERING

Matthew 20:22-23 "But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. 23. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father."

Hebrews 5:8-9 "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;"

ISRAEL DIED

1 Corinthians 10:1-3 "Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3. And did all eat the same spiritual meat;"

THREE DAYS

Numbers 33:8 "And they departed from before Pihahiroth, and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and went three days' journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in Marah."

NO WATER

Exodus 15:22-25 "So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. 23. And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24. And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? 25. And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,"

NO FOOD

Exodus 16:2-3 "And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: 3. And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

REPENT YE FOR THE KINGDOM

Matthew 3:1-2 "In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2. And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

REPENT, AND BE BAPTIZED

Acts 2:38-39 "Then Peter said unto them [ISRAEL], Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

BELIEVE AND IS BAPTIZED

Mark 16:16 "He that believeth [aor act nom s mas-Ptc] and is baptized [aor pas nom s mas-Ptc] shall be saved; but he that believeth [aor act nom s mas-Ptc] not shall be damned [condemned]."

REPENT AND BELIEVE PRESENT ACTIVE

Mark 1:15 "And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe [pres. act. imp.] the gospel."

THE EUNUCH BELIEVED

Acts 8:36-37 "And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37. And Philip said, If thou believest [pres. act Ind. 2s] with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

CORNELIUS WAS BAPTIZED

Acts 10:43-47 "To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth [pres. act acc s mas-Ptc] in him shall receive remission of sins. 44. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. ... 47. Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?"

BURIED WITH HIM

Colossians 2:12 "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."

 WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE

Romans 6:4 "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."
