HIS HOUR AND CUP
Wednesday Evening: July 25, 2007
Text: John 13:31-35 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
JUDAS, WHAT YOU DO, DO QUICKLY
John 13:27 And after the sop Satan (was in the upper room) entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
John 13:30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
SON OF MAN GLORIFIED
John 13:31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. (Son of man glorified only here and in 12:23, see also 17:1)
THE HOUR IS COME
John 12:23-24 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die (verse 32), it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
WHY ASK THE FATHER TO SAVE ME
John 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what [why, is better] shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
DEATH FOR EVERY MAN
John 12:31-33 Now is the judgment of this world (Israel): now shall the prince of this world (Israel) be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what (no article) death [thanatos, (for every man, Heb 2:9)] he should die [physically, (died for all 2 Cor. 5:14-15)].
MUST SUFFER AND BE KILLED
Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
IT WAS NOT HIS HOUR
John 7:30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
NO MAN LAID HANDS ON HIM
John 7:44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
HIS HOUR WAS NOT YET COME
John 8:20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
OUT OF THEIR HANDS
John 10:39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,
THE HOUR IS NOW COME, SCATTER
John 16:32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
THE HOUR IS COME
John 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
INTO THE HANDS OF SINNERS
Matthew 26:45-46 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
THEY LAID HANDS ON JESUS
Matthew 26:49-50 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
IN THE SAME HOUR
Matthew 26:55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
THEY SCOURGED AND CRUCIFIED HIM
Matthew 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
GOD SMOTE THE SHEPHERD
Matthew 26:31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
THE SOUL IS IN THE BLOOD
Leviticus 17:11 For the life [soul] of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement [reconciliation] for your souls [same word as life]: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement [reconciliation] for the soul [same word as life].
BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
Matthew 26:26-28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them (little children John 13:31), saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood (soul, for reconciliation) of the new testament, which is shed for many (the body of Christ) for the remission [deliverance] of [from] sins.
THEY WANTED TO BE CHIEF
Mark 10:37-39 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. 38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink [present active] of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
THE WAY TO BE CHIEF
Mark 10:44-45 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life [soul] a ransom for many.
BECOME LITTLE CHILDREN
Matthew 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
HE LAID DOWN HIS SOUL
John 10:14-15 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. 15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life [soul] for the sheep.
LOVE ONE ANOTHER
John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
LOVE IS TO LAY DOWN YOUR SOUL
John 15:12-13 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life [soul] for his friends.
INTIMATE FELLOWSHIP OF THE BODY
1 Corinthians 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion [intimate fellowship] of the blood (soul) of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion [intimate fellowship] of the body of Christ? 17 For we being [the] many are one bread, and one [the] body: for we are all partakers [present active sharing together] of that one [alike] bread (the body).
PROCLAIMING HIS DEATH FOR THE MANY
1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew [present active indicative, preach according to] the Lord's [the] death [thanatos, (the laying down of his soul for the many, the sheep)] till he come.
